Change4Life Roadshow, Harlequin Shopping Centre, Watford
Children and young families in Watford are to be targeted in a new Change4Life initiative to make the town fitter, healthier and more active.
The NHS in the East of England has been staging a series of local events aimed at bringing the healthy lifestyle message to young families in a way that is fun and accessible. Recent figures have indicated there are wide variations in the prevalence of obesity among young children and adults in the East of England, with Watford being one of the towns with the highest levels:
- The National Child Measurement Programme (2008-9), has indicated that in Watford 22.5% of 4& 5 year olds and 31.2% of 10 & 11 year olds were overweight or obese.
- The latest Department of Health profiles show that nearly 1 in 4 adults in Watford have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30. The healthy range is between 19.5 and 25.
Stuart Bloom, Chair of NHS Hertfordshire said:
“We are hoping the roadshow will give parents some fun ideas on how they can change their families’ diets and suggest ways of exercising so that more people in our area can lead healthier lifestyles. Because levels of obesity in Hertfordshire are higher than the regional average, the more of our residents who get to know about Change4Life now, the better the long-term health of everyone will be. We are extremely keen to get across the message to families that Change4Life can do exactly that – change your life.”
